Early Jiufen was only known by a few people, but due to the gold rush people flocked into the the town. This hilltop town started because of the rush, and is covered in gold mining history. Jiufen has become one of the most popular tourist attractions, aside from being able to share the tragic and romantic history of this town, the gold mining museum is a must see. You have to the visit the famous Shuqi Road and the rocky stairs surrounded by old-timey shops. When you are in the area, don't forget to try the taro balls; there are many different vendors to choose from on the old street. There are also plenty of shops that have some of the most traditional hand-made Taiwanese toys and souvenirs available for sale. Not only is it rowdy during the day, the night crowd is just as exciting. There is also the ocean view of the north eastern corner: as the daylight fades away the small mountain town slowly lights up, and the fishing boats below also light up, providing a grand view. Choose a tea shop from one of the many in the area to sit down for a traditional cup of Taiwanese green tea as you enjoy Jiufen's night view. Remember the night skies of Jiufen gets more beautiful the later it gets.
