What are the first words that pop into your mind when "Alishan" is mentioned? Divine trees? Sea of clouds? The train? Tourists from mainland China can usually come up one or two phrases, such as "alpine mountains" and "the maidens in Alishan are as beautiful as the waters, and the youth in Alishan are strong as a mountain", both of which bring up much feelings of nostalgia and yearning towards Alishan.  It's a must visit place when touring Taiwan. Although the altitude is not as tall as Yushan (Mt. Jade), there are 18 mountains within the Alishan area with an altitude of over 2000 meters above sea level. They are located in a cloudy and misty mountain region, and ever-changing scenery throughout the four seasons allows visitors to enjoy spring flowers, summer vacations, autumn maples, and winter clouds. The forest are vast and majestic, with visible rock cliffs. What isn't there to like? In Alishan, you must pay a visit to the towering divine trees.  Located here are two divine trees that were once destroyed by a fire. According to legend, a pair of lovers who were not accepted by their village committed suicide by jumping into the precipice below. Two red cypress trees grew in their place, and the villagers named them the "husband and wife" tree. There's also the  Sister Ponds located in the forest area, and legend states that a pair of sisters fell in love with the same man, but in order to spare each other of the heartbreak, they killed themselves by jumping into the pond.  The "older" sister pond and "younger" sister pond are two small adjacent lakes, and although the water is not too deep, its green in color with faint ripples. This Alishan: not only are there the well-known divine trees and sea of clouds, but there are also many stories and tales to be discovered.
