There's a castle made out of glutinous rice juice, syrup, sand, and powdered oyster shell. It sounds rather delicious, doesn't it? Surely such a castle must exist only in fairy tales. But believe it not, in Tainan, there's a castle that's actually constructed this way. It's Taiwan's oldest administrative unit: Anping Fort. After the Dutch occupied Anping in Taiwan, they constructed "Fort Zeelandia", which is now Anping Fort. It was not only a major administrative center, but also a hub for foreign trade as well. This castle later underwent renovation during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, as well as the Japanese occupation period. The Fort Zeelandia Museum within the area is also one of the castle's ancient monuments, amd has been turned into a museum to commemorate the monuments of Anping Fort. It displays models of the Tait & Co. Merchant House, Julius Mannich & Co. Merchant House, and more, showing both Anping Fort's past and present. Angping Fort isn't just a fairy tale castle after all, nowadays banyan roots run wild, the red bricks are mottled, and laughter can constantly be heard in the park, showing just how much its history has progressed and changed.
