Kaohsiung, formerly known as Takow, signed a treaty with Beijing during the Qing Dynasty. Afterwards, a commercial trade harbor with customs was opened, and the British Consulate moved from Danshui down to Takow. The British Consulate at Takow is Taiwan's only intact and fully preserved official residence and consulate site. Nowadays it is mainly used to display Kaohsiung's historical relics, with important cultural relics related to the development and modern history of Takow being exhibited. The architecture of the exterior possesses a colonial style, yet it utilizes traditional red bricks and tiles. It's simple, but elegant, and has become a hot spot for wedding photography. The consulate's interior, aside from displaying Kaohsiung's history, also features small cultural shops and occasional exhibits set up within the exhibition hall. The most interesting showcase would be the detailed wax model of the building's interior and exterior, with a mixture of British and Han Chinese, reproducing the atmosphere of the consulate during that time. Of course in addition to appreciating the cultural and historical background, and architectural aesthetics of the consulate, you can also enjoy English afternoon tea at the nearby restaurants. It's a leisure that only distinguished figures could enjoy in the past, but nowadays anyone can try it.
