Located within Kaohsiung's Dashu District and on the western side of Kaoping River, Fo Guang Shan Monastery is Taiwan's largest Mahayana Buddhist location and is also Southern Taiwan's largest holy site for Buddhism. Founded by Master Xingyun, aside from the primary four temples of Hall of Great Strength, Dabei Hall, Dazhi Hall, and Dashuo Hall, the walls of these four temples possess over 14800 small holes. Each hole contains a small statue of Buddha, solemn and dignified in appearance. Fo Guan Shan's most notable big Buddha, reaches up 120 meters in height. Glittering underneath the illuminating sunlight, it's quite an impressive sight. In addition, the Buddha Memorial Hall is a place that you cannot miss out on. The nine-year-old museum houses a collection of Buddha-related artifacts from around the world, and the giant Buddha behind the museum was built using 1,872 tons of iron and copper, making it the tallest sitting bronze Buddha in the world. Fo Guang Shan is the most festive during the Spring Festival every year. Colored lanterns are hung up everywhere, and become a gorgeous sea of lights during the night, but it also demonstrates another side to the normally solemn Fo Guang Shan.
