Martyrs' Shrine sits on Shoushan, and was originally built by the Japanese to be a Japanese shrine. After the national recovery, the Taiwanese government decided to bury the bodies of veterans here.

Martyrs' Shrine is mainly built with Chinese architecture, but some remnants of the old shrine are preserved. Pine trees that give the area a serene feeling surround the shrine. The quiet atmosphere attracts plenty of seniors who come to walk and exercise, and if you're lucky you may meet the eccentric grandpa who can play you a tune using just a leaf. The great archway and the gazebo that face the Kaohsiung port are some of the best spots to take in the night view of Kaohsiung. The port of Kaohsiung, Building 85, and the Dream Mall's ferry wheel are all within a single glance. At night this place is filled with couples and photographers who are trying to capture Kaohsiung's  night view.
