Donglong Temple is located in Pingtung County's Donggang Township, and mainly worships Marshal Wen. Donglong Temple is a legendary temple. During the Qing Dynasty, it was destroyed by floodwaters, but was later reconstructed at its present site using driftwood washed away by the flood. Because wood at that time were all engraved with records of the Donggang plague, the people then believed that the wood was sent by Marshal Wen to rebuild the temple. Today, the Donglong Temple will host one of Taiwan's most important religious ceremonies every three years: the King Boat Ceremony. The King Boat Ceremony is a week long religious festival, intended to invite the plague god onto the king's boat to be sent off, so that there may be peace. During the celebration, there will be a large boat, imitating the warships of ancient times. This boat will be crafted by local master artisans, who will spend up to two years creating it. Whether it be the wood carvings or colorful painted designs, everything is crafted with the upmost care. The ceremony, from beginning until end, with a total of 13 steps such as inviting the king, parading the perimeters, and religious assembly. The last day of the festival, is also its climax: sending off the king, which is the burning of the boat. The boat, consumed by the mighty flames, symbolizes the plague god being taken away. It's a magnificent sight, and definitely worth seeing.
