On the side of Pinge Road, there's a huge stone towering over the coastline. When viewed from different angles, people tend to make different associations with it. This is Pingtung's well-known landmark, the Sail Rock. Situated between Kenting and Eluanbi, Sail Rock is a tableland coral reef. Under constant battering from the sea waves, erosion and gravity have caused the limestone terrain to weather away and the reef rocks to form into a cliff. Because this huge rock is still located on its original rocky coral reef platform, it can still stand in the middle of the ocean, forming its unique appearance today. Sail Rock reaches 50 meters in height, and 40 meters in surrounding width. It's shaped like a boat entering a harbor, hence its name. The top of the rock is covered in weeds, flowers, and shrubs, and is a nesting habitat for birds. Its surroundings are also a great location for snorkeling. If you happen to be lucky enough, you may even come across clusters of fish by Sail Rock. Thousands of tiny fish are all gathered together, and it's quite the sight. If you want to see this rare sight, it's suggested that you get in contact with local bed and breakfasts or local diving operators. This way, you can arrange for a collective group to snorkel around Sail Rock, its safer this way too.
