Lanyang Museum was opened in 2010, the building perfectly blends into the natural geographical environment of Yilan. The architectural concept was originated from the northwest coastlines, showing the essence of the beauty of the mountains and ocean. Also, with the idea that "Yilan itself is the greatest museum", the exhibitions are mostly about three aspects — mountains, sea and flatlands, in order to express the geographical and cultural characteristics of Yilan.

For the mountains aspect, the museum presents Yilan's rich forest resources and humid rainy climate that breeds Yilan's prosperous forestry industry.
For the flatlands aspect, rivers play an extremely essential role in the lifestyle of local residents, therefore, most of the exhibitions introduce the agricultural side of Yilan.
Last, for the sea side, the museum brings us into the world of undersea volcanos and the scientific explanation behind earthquakes.

Also, there is an area specially designed for kids under age of 10, the features include "ocean theater", "underwater rain forest", "underwater highway” and “adventures of Turtle Island". The goal of getting kids familiarized with oceanic culture can be easily achieved by the interaction between the children and the exhibitions.
