If you haven't been to Jiuqudong before, then you truly haven't visited Taroko Gorge. But this remark isn't serious at all, as Jiuqudong is the most representative scenic attraction of Taroko Gorge. Renowned internationally, the South Korean variety show  " Grandpas Over Flowers" once filmed here. This tunnel, one of the longest on the Central Cross-Island Highway, originally was a traffic lane. Edged against the high mountain ravine, along with the bluish-green waters of Liwu Creek, and white marble cliffs in between, many tourists are attracted here. However, in order to ease the traffic, it was turned into a pedestrian trail. With the absence vehicles, walk for a total of 2 kilometers in length all while admiring the natural beauty of this steep ravine. If you look up,and you can see traces of hatchet marks, as a trace of when it was still being carved. The trail is winding and features many twists and turns, hence the origin of its name "Jiuqudong" (meaning Tunnel of Nine Turns). The precipice located next to the trail is quite nerve-wracking, and you can hear the constant gurgling of Liqu Creek's waters. Maybe you'll even encounter some swallows. Fluttering throughout the gorge, they are Taroko's residents and forage for a living in this area. They'll also build nests and raise young in the trail. When admiring the beauty of this gorge, please mind your personal safety. Especially watch out for falling rocks!
