For military purposes, Nankan built many "underground wharfs" to act as docking points for vessels involved in guerilla warfare. Beihai Tunnel is one such tunnel, and is a rare battlefield landscape open for tourism in Matsu. After viewing the landscape of Matsu, you can imagine how difficult it must have been to build this project. Back then, in addition to using dynamite blasts, many soldiers used their hatchets to carve as well. As a result, many lives were sacrficied in the process. This waterway, shaped like the character "井" is 18 meters in height, 10 meters wide, and 640 meters in length. The trail spans for 700 meters, and it takes around 30 minutes to complete a trip. Since water will enter the tunnel during high tide, the water level will reach 8 meters high, and will flood the trail. In addition to the restricted visiting hours, the tunnel interiors are wet and damp and require much caution when walking. Starting from 2015, the tunnel has held the " Beihai Tunnel Evening Blue Tears Boating Tour" . There's no light pollution as you set off on the tour, and you can ride a traditional fishing boat through the surrounding areas and admire the flickering blue tears at night.
