Located on the outskirts of Taipei, Yangmingshan was originally called Caoshan, or Grass Mountain. Yangmingshan National Park is adjacent to the Taipei metropolitan area. The entire area is mainly comprised of volcanic clusters from Mt.Datun, and covers an area of 11456 hectares. Due to the volcanic activity, there are cone and bell shaped volcanoes, crater lakes, sulfur pores, and geothermal hot springs. The composition of the geology here is andesite. The cone and bell shaped volcanoes and crater lakes make up the unique geological landscapes in this area. Both Xiaoyoukeng and Dayoukeng, mangers, and sulfer openings all are subject to strong volcanic activity, and the many hot spring areas scattered throughout the park are widely known. Because of its longitude and latitude, the climate here is considered both subtropical and temperate. In the winter, Yangmingshan is affected by the northeastern monsoons. The mountainous areas will frequently be subjected to cold winds and rains, and in the case of strong cold fronts, snow can occasionally be seen falling. Affected by the monsoon, the park's vegetation consist of high and low grasslands, broad-leaved forests, subtropical rainforests, and aquatic plants. Taiwanese quillwort breed here, as well as rhododendrons, butterflies, and birds. Many cherry blossom trees and azaleas are planted in the park. The Yangmingshan National Park Office has the following recreational areas planned out: Xiaoyoukeng Recreation Area, Lengshuikeng Area, Datun Recreation Area, Erziping Recreation Area, Qingtiangang Area, Yangming House, Lin Yutang House, Longfeng Sulfur Valley (Liuhuang Valley) Recreation Area, and three ecological areas that you'll need permits in order to enter: Lujiaokeng Ecological Protected Area, Dream Lake, and and Huangzuishan. Furthermore, there's also Qianshan Park, Yangmingshan Park, the fountain located beside Yangming Park's Flower Clock, Visitor's Center, Qixing Park, Tianxiyuan Ecology Education Center,  Milk Lake, and a wide assortment of other scenic spots and locations.
