Located in Ximending, Ximen's Red House (commonly referred to as Octagonal Hall during the Japanese occupation era) was originally the first officially built public market in taiwan. The building is a two-stories tall, historic red brick building and every aspect of its facade is 8 meters. It utilizes an octogonal appearance to construct the market entrance, and a cross-shaped appearance to form its main feature. Inside the octogonal building, you can see eight "tiger windows", and its parapet walls. This is Taiwan's famous cultural and creative arts venue, containing performance spaces and many gay bars. Taiwan's Ministry of the Interior has even included the Red House as a class three historical site. In 1949, a well-known Shanghai businessman named Chen Huiwen, migrated to Taiwan, and along with several other people, rented Octagon Hall from the government. It's name was then changed to Shanghai Gardens Theater. Later on, the content of the performances also shifted from Beijing operas to storytelling. In 2002, it was operated by the Paper Windmill Cultural Foundation. The first floor features a cultural exhibition area and a paper windmill cafe, as well as old pictures relating to the Red House and film screenings. The Paper Windmill Cafe provides a relaxing rest area and meals for visitors. On the second floor of the Red House, hundred-year-old red bricks and the steel beam supporting the building will appear. The teahouse theater opens on 8 o'clock on weekend evenings, and on a section of empty space on the second floor of the Red House's cross-shaped building, there's a creative area inviting shops to establish their grounds there.
