Located at the south bank of Dajia Creek in Qingshui Town, Taichung, the Gaomei Wetland is one of the destinations for numerous migrating birds every autumn and winter. These birds come either for a short stay before continuing their journey or to spend their entire season in this warmer spot. No matter the former or the latter, these special visitors always bring liveliness and joy to the area. Through efforts of Academia Sinica Institute of Zoology, Biology Department of Tunghai University, Agriculture Bureau of Taichung County Government, local habitant, and non-governmental organizations, Gaomei Wetland was officially settled by Taichung Government, who declared the total area to be 701.3 acres and recognized the ecological importance of it. Wildlife Protection Laws are therefore applied to this area and its commercial administration and conservation studies in the future, by which government hopes to strike a balance between environmental protection and ecological tourism. The best time to visit Gaomei Wetland is at the sunset. The sight of pinwheels spinning and waterbird flying by as the fire-red sun submerges into the horizon is surely a view of awe. Gaomei Wetland is also a very popular tourism spot in Taichung.
