Xiaoyoukeng, located within Yangmingshan, is a natural volcanic crater. Early on, this place was abundant with sulfur. Therefore, sulfur was commonly collected and then processed into oily yellow liquid. This is how the name "Youkeng" (Oily Pit) came to be. You can witness amazing volcanic activity at Xiayoukeng. Many magnificent cliffs and precipices are located here, and you can see beautiful crystallized sulfur everywhere near the volcanic fumaroles. White smoke surrounds the entire area. The sound of volcanic activity coming from the fumaroles can be heard as you walk around Xiaoyoukeng Recreation Area. A tourist service center can be found within the recreation area, and you can pay them a visit beforehand. Information regarding Yangmingshan is provided inside, and the geological and ecological environment are displayed as well so that visitors can familarize themselves with Yangmingshan's geography. It is important that when visiting Xiaoyoukeng to not get too close to the fumaroles, as the high temperature of the spewing jets can cause burns. There are also many small pits containing high temperature spring water. Take care not to accidentally scald yourself!
