Manyueyuan National Forest Recreation Area is located within New Taipei City's Sanxia District, Youmi Li, No.174-1. Because the mountaintops resemble a round full moon, that is how it got its name. With a total of 1,573 hectares and an elevation of 300-1728 meters above sea level, the park is mostly comprised of Manyueyuan Mountain, Xiongkong Nanshan, Beicha Tianshan, Laka Shan, Dongyan Shan, and other mountain peaks. The deep valley is surrounded by these mountains, and is situated at the very edge of the Xueshan mountain range. It features flowing streams, with the Manyueyuan Waterfall located upstream of the main river, and the Chunu Waterfall located upstream of the tributary, as well as the Yinlian Waterfall, and other beautiful sceneries. The topography of the river valley is precipitous, and the drop in elevation is steep. It is a landscape filled with many waterfalls, and is known as a "waterfall paradise". Chuhu Waterfall is also known as Hongsha Waterfall, due to the water reflecting the rainbow. Yinlian, or Silver Curtains Waterfall, got its name due to the sunlight shining on the waterfall, it appearing like a silver curtain. The area also contains many trails. Along the way are pavilions, picnic areas, landscape bridges, barrier-free spaces, explanation signs, and other facilities and installations.
Manyueyuan is a middle-altitude mountain area, and its forests are natural broad-leaved forests. Commonly seen plants are Taiwan incense cedar, camphor laurel, large-leaved nanmu, incense nanmu, bishop wood, red fruit fig trees, fragant maples, green maples, sweet potatoes, ferns, willows, cedars, acacia, and more. Animals include multi-colored birds, white-eared sibias, Japanese white-eyes, Bankor toads, emerald tree frogs, Formosan pit vipers, many-banded kraits, water snakes, frogs, and butterflies. Manyueyuan is a good place for hiking and viewing waterfalls, streams, and maples, in addition to bird, frog, and butterfly-watching.
