Shengping Theater is located on Qingbian Road, of New Taipei City's Ruifang District. Established during the Japanese occupation period, it was once a wooden stage located by the market and mostly showed operas. Later on with the stage collapsing due its old age, it was rebuilt into a theater. It occupies an area of around 200 pings, and was the biggest theater in all of Taiwan during the Japanese period, and flourished during an era of song and dance. Nowadays, it has been converted into a hollow wall, and the surrounding buildings on all four sides are often used by artists as scenery. Many movies, such as "A Borrowed Life", "A City of Sadness", "Blue Mountain Coffee", and "Silent Hill" have used scenery here. In 2011, the New Taipei City Government rebuilt Shengping Theater and reopened it, with the concept of "Shengping New Paradise". It exhibits previous building materials and equipment, as well as retro ticket windows. At the door, showtimes from the past are displayed along with signs showing ticket prices. There's interesting nostalgic shops, souvenir badges, rooms that introduce Shengping Theater's lifespan and history, film novels displayed by the windows, old charcoal movie projectors, and more. Every Friday and Saturday afternnon, movies filmed in Jiufen are screened, free of charge.
