Hsinchu City Fire Museum is located on No.4, Zhongshan Road, in Hsinchu City's North District. It was built during the Japanese occupation era, and was formerly known as "Hsinchu City Fire Bureau". It is a well-preserved, professional, fire-fighting building, with six-story reinforced bricks and octagonal bell towers. During the Japanese occupation period, it was called the "watchtower". When communications were not as well developed back then, there was no telephone available to report any fires. The purpose of the watchtower was to let the firemen climb up high and survey the area that the smoke was coming from. On top of the tower was a sound tube and alarm bell, transmitting news of a fire to the people on the first floor. The alarm bell can also call on volunteer firefighters so that they may facilitate firefighting work.
The museum displays firetrucks from the Japanese era, firetrucks from Minguo Year 60, and early disaster relief equipment (aquatic life-saving equipment, alarm bells, and double-deck ladders during the Japanese era). The main hall contains a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training area, firefighting personnel slides, interactive computers, firefighting clothing (Japanese style, modern style, heat resistant clothing), various fire control products, old firefighting equipment, and more. There's also a fire-extinguishing experience area, fire equipment operations area, fire escape experience, and a multimedia area as well. If you want to better understand firefighting culture and gain more insight into the subject, in addition to strengthening your knowledge of disaster prevention, then this museum is a reccomended visit.
