Guanwu is located within the boundaries of Hsinchu County's Wufeng Township and Miaoli County's Taian Township. This area is often filled with clouds and fog, and is thusly named "Guanwu", meaning "to observe fog". It's also known as "The Hometown of Clouds". Entering from Hsinchu's Wufeng Township, you can encounter much beautiful scenery along the way, constantly changing as you follow the mountains. The clouds and fog are also continuously changing underneath the light, and the sight is a stunning one. Guanwu Recreation Area is about 1800 meters above sea level, and in order to view Dabajian Mountain, you  must first pass through Guanwu. Several forest trails can be found within the Guanwu National Forest Recreation Area. There's a trail leading to the 2000 year old giant cypress tree area, where you may admire the giant trees as well as waterfalls, the sunrise, sea of clouds, and many more sights. Guanwu National Forest Recreation Area is rich in ecology and mountain alpine birds, which makes it a good place for birdwatching. In addition, the park is home to many endangered plants and animals, endemic to Taiwan. Near the visitor's center is  an ecological center for the Taiwan salamander, displaying their ecology. There's also habitat introductions and film showings from time to time. However because Guanwu National Forest Recreation Area is located at a high altitude, the road leading there is very bumpy and steep. Some areas within the forest will only be open depending on the weather and road conditions and will be adjusted accordingly. When you want to enter the mountain, you may first check for relevant announcements ahead of time to get an understanding of the weather and road conditions for the day. Before entering the mountain, you must first apply for a permit after passing through the Xiuluan checkpoint. You only need to prepare an ID and fill out information on the document. The checkpoint will also provide current information and road conditions at Guanwu Recreation Area, which will no doubt prove to be helpful. (Taiwan Forest Recreation website : The forestry office can also provide group tours, although prior reservation is required. Please consult the website above for more information.
